About this event

Story Room. Staff Pick: The 27th Day (1957) This month's film was selected by one of our library staff members to share a lesser-known science fiction favorite. Five people from different parts of the world suddenly disappear, only to find themselves aboard an alien spacecraft. There, each is given a mysterious device capable of unleashing devastating destruction—and told that no one else can use it. Returned to Earth with their new power and their identities revealed to the world, the five must decide what to do while governments race to find them. Released in 1957, The 27th Day takes the familiar alien-contact story in an unusual direction, exploring questions of power, fear, responsibility, and what humanity might do when given the means to destroy itself. Join us for this intriguing Cold War-era science fiction film and see what happens when visitors from another world leave humanity's fate in human hands. Runtime: 1 hour, 15 minutes (75 minutes) Light refreshments will be provided. No registration is required.
