About this event

Join staff on a trip to Hobcaw Barony’s undeveloped two-mile beach on the southern end of Debidue Island. A small hike off the beaten path into the woods is the site of brick ruins believed to be “The Castle,” the summer home of William Alston, aka “King Billy” the first of the one “L” Alstons. This site is where his daughter-in-law Theodosia Burr spent time during summer. Discussion will revolve around the story of the Alstons and their summers at the Castle. Afterwards, the hike will continue along the beach to discuss history and ecology. Please remember to wear closed-toe shoes, dress for the weather, and bring water. If weather conditions prevent safe travel, the program will be cancelled. (Exertion level: High impact – walking on uneven terrain at times, standing for long periods) Reservations required. Book Hike: Beach to Castle $38 per person
