About this event

@ Almost five miles of the original Kings Highway can be found on Hobcaw Barony. This hike will take a four-mile roundtrip hike of the historic by-way which originated as an Indigenous Peoples trail and was later joined with the 1,300-mile road built at the royal command of Charles II. Points of interest include longleaf pine forests where the formerly endangered Red-cockaded Woodpecker nests, a cemetery for plantation owners and members of the famous Caines decoy carving family, a canal dug by enslaved people to flood rice fields, and the ferry landing at Frasers Point where travelers would cross from Calais to Dover Plantations. Participants will need to dress for the weather, wear closed-toe shoes, and bring a water bottle. If weather conditions prevent safe travel, the program will be cancelled. (Exertion level: High impact- hiking, standing for long periods, walking on uneven terrain) Reservations required. Please note that tour participants travel via a 14-person passenger bus on rustic roads comprised of sand and dirt. Often, the roads are extremely rough and rutted, a situation which will jostle riders on the bus. Although the staff at Hobcaw Barony tries to keep them smooth, due to changeable weather and other factors, the condition of the rural roadways cannot be guaranteed to be smooth. per person Add to calendar Google Calendar iCalendar Outlook 365 Outlook Live
