About this event
6:30–8:00 p.m. The art and style of rock music videos from the mid 1980s through the early 2000s—the choreography, the fashion, the swooning looks!—defined an era for millennials and GenX. Join us in the Bartos Screening Room to see a selection of ebullient music videos from director Nigel Dick. They include Britney Spears’s iconic “Baby One More Time” and Oasis’s “Wonderwall,” plus videos featuring Cher, Celine Dion, Tears for Fears, Guns N’ Roses, Alice Cooper, Def Leppard, and plenty of surprises, too! These videos show some of the chaos and charm of the era. This free screening will be followed by a conversation with Nigel Dick and Rolling Stone senior writer David Browne about the making of these classics and a book signing of Dick’s Music Video Mischief: Ozzy to Britney, Oasis to Gn’R, McCartney to Cher: a lifetime of rock and chaos (2026, Trouser Press Books), available for sale in the MoMI Shop (store closes at 8:00 p.m.). Free with RSVP. Special Guests: After a brief stint busking in the Paris Metro, Nigel Dick got his start in the music business at London’s upstart Stiff label in the late ’70s. He began a career as a music video director; ultimately working with hundreds of stars, including Oasis, Ozzy Osbourne, Cher, Paul McCartney, Guns n’ Roses, Toto, Britney Spears, Celine Dion, Alice Cooper, Def Leppard, Alice in Chains, and Tears for Fears. If you’ve ever watched MTV, you’ve seen his work. He has directed more than 450 music videos and 35+ documentaries and feature films. He has won three MTV awards, two Billboard Awards, three MVPA awards and one Brit award. His videos have been nominated for a further 21 MTV awards, 26 Much Music Awards, and a Grammy. His book Music Video Mischief is out on Trouser Press Books September 15. David Browne is a Senior Writer at Rolling Stone, where he contributes deep-dive reports, reviews and profiles on music. He is also the author of seven books, including biographies of Sonic Youth, Jeff Buckley, the…
