When his young daughter’s technosapien companion, the android Yang (Min), malfunctions, Jake (Farrell) must come to terms with what this loss means for his family. Adapted from a short story by Alexander Weinstein, and directed with aesthetic precision and restraint by Kogonada, the director of tender films about interpersonal connection such as Columbus and this year’s Zi, After Yang is a sensitive and visually striking inquiry into what it means to be human. Both of these films have received recognition and/or support from the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation’s program in Public Understanding of Science and Technology.
