About this event

Experience the power, rhythm, and artistry of Japanese taiko drumming with Mujin Taiko, a kumi-daiko, or ensemble-style taiko, performance group based in the Mid-Hudson Valley and Connecticut. Mujin Taiko brings together performers who have studied and performed with several professional taiko groups. Their performances blend traditional and modern elements of taiko, drawing inspiration from both Japanese and North American taiko communities. Audiences will experience dignified movements and resonant soundscapes that reference traditional shrine music, along with the driving rhythms and energetic beats that have made taiko such a thrilling and memorable art form. The program will begin with a short performance by Mujin Taiko, followed by an introductory hands-on drumming workshop. Participants will learn basic kuchishoga, the vocal calls used to teach taiko rhythms, and try their hand at playing Matsuri, a festival-inspired piece. This fun and welcoming workshop offers an engaging introduction to taiko drumming and the culture, discipline, and joy that come with learning the art. Space in the hands-on drumming portion is limited to 20 participants. To give everyone a chance to play, participants will be divided into two groups of 10; each group will drum during one workshop session and observe during the other. Schedule 11:00 AM – Performance by Mujin Taiko 11:15 AM – Transition to workshop 11:20 AM – Drumming Workshop Session 1 11:40 AM – Drumming Workshop Session 2 This special program will take place on Innisfree’s scenic overlook, where the powerful sound of the drums will resonate across the garden. Even visitors who do not take part in the workshop are invited to enjoy the performance and experience the stirring sound of taiko in this remarkable landscape. — Rain Date: TBD. —
