Innisfree-Inspired Japanese Calligraphy Workshop

Discover the art of Japanese calligraphy (shodō), where brush, ink, and breath come together in a meditative creative practice. In this hands-on workshop, led by members of the Mid-Hudson Japanese Community Association on Innisfree’s scenic overlook, participants will be introduced to the basic techniques of traditional calligraphy while exploring how movement, balance, and empty space give written characters their expressive power. Drawing inspiration from Innisfree’s landscape, which was deeply influenced by Chinese and Japanese scroll paintings, students will observe the garden’s forms, textures, and rhythms and translate them into bold brushstrokes and simple characters that reflect the spirit of place. No prior experience is necessary. All materials will be provided. Participants will leave with their own calligraphy works and a deeper appreciation for this centuries-old art form and its relationship to landscape and design. — Rain Date: Saturday, September 5, 2026.— The Mid-Hudson Japanese Community Association, Inc. (MHJCA), a not-for-profit 501c3 organization, was created in 2001 by individuals, families, professionals, and corporations from the Mid-Hudson Valley region of upstate New York. Membership is open to those of any culture and ancestry. MHJCA has been offering enrichment programs to local communities including schools and public libraries since 2005. They share their knowledge through demonstrations, hands-on workshops, and educational presentations, to introduce the beauty and heritage of Japanese arts and culture, including the important elements of Japanese philosophy and spirituality.
