About this event
Artist Educator, Toriana Sauro Ready to finally learn how to use a sewing machine without the fear or confusion? This beginner-friendly class is designed for anyone with zero sewing experience. Students will have the opportunity to learn from Toriana Sauro, whose work is currently on view in the summer exhibition, Luxe CT: Velvet Mills to Modern Runways. Whether you’ve never touched a sewing machine or you’re convinced you “just aren’t crafty,” this class will gently guide you through the basics while building your confidence every step of the way. Class size is limited to eight students to allow for individualized instruction and support. Students are encouraged to bring a sewing machine if they have one. If a student plans to bring their own machine, the instructor will usually ask to see a photo or the model name beforehand to determine whether the machine is suitable for teaching and learning in the workshop. You’ll learn how to operate and care for a sewing machine, practice essential hand-stitching techniques, and get comfortable with the core skills every sewist needs. Best of all, you’ll apply what you learn by creating two practical, customized projects: your very own pin cushion and pin-cushion bag, plus a safety-pin bag. You create useful tools you’ll be able to use throughout your sewing journey. By the end of the class, you’ll walk away not just with handmade supplies, but with real confidence using a machine, a solid understanding of basic sewing terms, and the foundational skills to keep exploring this fun and creative craft. Come learn, make, and leave inspired! In this class, you will learn how to: How to thread and operate a sewing machine (bobbin winding, tension basics, and switching stitches) Machine safety and maintenance (basic care, troubleshooting, and common issues) Essential hand stitches Understanding basic sewing tools and how to use them correctly (pins, needles, seam rippers, fabric scissors, etc.) How to stuff, shape, and…
