Don’t miss MMoA’s Speakers Series on Tuesday, September 15 from 5:30 – 6:30pm for a spirited conversation about quilting with members of SAQA: the Studio Art Quilt Associates, CT Region, whose work is part of Luxe CT: Velvet Mills to Modern Runways. — Kate Themel is an award-winning artist living in Cheshire, Connecticut. Kate earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Fine Art in 1992 and began using fabric as an artistic medium in 1996. Kate has developed a distinct, painterly style in her compositions, which are constructed using basic quilting techniques and materials. Kate Themel has created custom fiber art for individuals, hospitals and corporate clients and her unique fiber pieces have been exhibited in art galleries and museums from Boston to Botswana. Her quilted compositions have been juried into international exhibitions such as Art Quilt Elements, Kagoshima Quilt Show in Japan, and Quilt National, where Kate’s work earned the People’s Choice Award and the Young Emerging Artist Award. Margaret Phillips‘ work has been exhibited internationally, won awards, been published in books and magazines, and is in the collections of two museums. The exhibitions include Quilt National, Quilts=Art=Quilts, and SAQA’s traveling exhibits Textile Posters and Color in Context: Blue. The human figure and color studies have been her main subjects. Margaret has a BFA in painting and worked as a draftsperson, an administrator, and a bookkeeper. She draws, paints, sews, crochets, embroiders, and tap dances. — Admission to this event is free to MMoA members, $10 to nonmembers. Doors open at 5pm, discussion starts promptly at 5:30pm. Parking validations are provided with admission to all evening events at the Museum.
