About this event
Artist Educator, Ali Macdonald This hands-on workshop introduces felt collage as a fine art practice rooted in textile traditions and pattern-based design. Working from a shared source image, participants will explore how textile processes can be transformed into image-making, moving from textile to art. Students will practice “the art of simplification,” learning how editing toward shapes is a creative act rather than a limitation. Using techniques inspired by collage and pattern construction, participants will identify major shapes and value areas, create layered tracing templates, and translate a flat image into structured visual depth. Using a color-coded system, students will cut, organize, and assemble felt pieces layer by layer, from background to foreground, building a final composition through placement, overlap, and design decisions. The process mirrors textile construction, where individual pieces come together to form a complete image. Throughout the workshop, discussion will highlight how individual style emerges even when everyone begins from the same image: same image, different results. Instruction will cover simplification, layering, cutting, composition, and finishing approaches. Participants will leave with a completed or near-completed felt collage, along with templates and methods for continued exploration at home. No prior sewing or textile experience required. All levels welcome. September 19 Saturday, 10 am – 12:30PM Members $55 / Nonmembers $65 Class Supply List All necessary materials are provided for a $15 supplies fee, payable directly to the instructor.
