Berry Science: From Berries to Syrup Participants explore berries through the science of color, plant pigments, preservation, and extraction, while learning how berries have been gathered and prepared by different communities throughout history. Project: Make Elderberry Syrup Explore: ● What gives berries their deep colors? ● The best time to harvest berries ● How do plants make pigments? ● Why have people preserved berries as syrups, jams, and dried foods? ● Traditional and cultural uses of elderberries ● How heat, water, and sugar change a plant preparation ● Safe identification and responsible harvesting Hands-on: Prepare and taste elderberry syrup.
