About this event

Explore how speculative techniques can open new possibilities for personal writing. Inspired by Awake in the Floating City by Susanna Kwan, SFPL's 2026 One City One Book selection, participants will explore the concept of the speculative memoir through guided writing exercises and small-group discussion. Experiment with techniques such as distancing and fictionalization to approach memories and lived experiences from fresh perspectives. No previous writing experience or familiarity with the novel is required, though readers may discover additional connections. Nandita Dinesh is an author, educator, researcher, and theatre maker whose work explores the intersections of storytelling, education, and social impact. She designs writing and learning experiences that encourage participants to think critically, write creatively, and engage with complex ideas. Nandita holds a PhD in Drama from the University of Cape Town, an MA in Performance Studies from New York University, and a BA in Economics and Theater from Wellesley College. In 2017, she received the Elliott Hayes Award for Outstanding Achievement in Dramaturgy from Literary Managers and Dramaturgs of the Americas. Space limited. Seats available first come, first served.
