About this event
For all our attempts to understand America’s political divisions, two essential questions call for answers. How did it happen that many Americans were predisposed to find strong appeal in Donald Trump? How does political appeal actually work? In Stolen Pride: Loss, Shame, and the Rise of the Right, bestselling author and National Book Award finalist Arlie Russell Hochschild explores how communities struggling with long-term economic decline and social dislocation have become receptive to a powerful political message through what she calls “emotional capture.” Her research led her to Pikeville, Kentucky, in the heart of Appalachia, where the collapse of the coal industry, persistent poverty, and the opioid crisis have reshaped daily life. Although Pikeville was in the political center thirty years ago, by 2016, 80 percent of the district’s population voted for Donald Trump. Praised by Michael Sandel as offering “a master class in listening,” and by the Financial Times as “a curious and skilled listener,” Hochschild focuses on a group swept up in the shifting political landscape: blue-collar men. In small churches, hillside hollers, roadside diners, trailer parks, and Narcotics Anonymous meetings, she introduces us to unforgettable people and offers an original lens through which to see them and the wider world, in a work called “one of the year’s most important books” by Counterpunch. Join Malcolm Clemens Young, dean of Grace Cathedral, for a conversation with Arlie Russell Hochschild about Stolen Pride, America’s evolving political landscape, and why listening across cultural and political divides remains essential to understanding one another.
