About this event
The winter solstice, also called the hibernal solstice, occurs when either of Earth's poles reaches its maximum tilt away from the Sun. In the Northern Hemisphere, this falls on December 21. This date is also known as the longest night of the year, or the darkest. Every year, Hillsborough hosts a lantern walk on this night on the Riverwalk. It is a beautiful celebration where participants carry handmade lanterns to light up the night as they walk along the Riverwalk. Illuminate the darkest day
