Directed by William Friedkin and written by William Peter Blatty, adapting his own best-selling 1971 novel, the film made an essential contribution to the horror genre, pitting the Catholic church against a demon for control of a young girl’s soul. The film’s remarkable, often shocking effects were done by the brilliant and pioneering makeup master Dick Smith (Little Big Man, The Godfather), who transformed the possessed young girl Regan (Linda Blair) into a foul, blasphemous monster.
