Eleven years before Disney’s Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, Lotte Reiniger’s stop-motion feature The Adventures of Prince Achmed, debuted in 1926 at the Volksbühne in Berlin, during the height of the Weimar Republic. Adapted from the tales known as the Arabian Nights, the film follows the adventures of a young prince atop a magical, flying horse who joins forces with the likes of Aladdin and a fabled witch. To evade his destined ill fate, he saves a beautiful princess and battles a sorcerer’s army of monsters. This thrilling, sensuous tale, told through Reiniger’s meticulous cut-paper silhouette animation technique, still enthralls audiences of all ages one hundred years later.
