About this event
Join us for a look at the history of NYC through the prints and paintings of the Mount Vernon Hotel. Celebrate 200 years of the Mount Vernon Hotel with a new featured program, “Telling Stories Through Art: New York City History in Prints and Paintings.” Visitors on this tour will learn about NYC and the Mount Vernon Hotel through artwork – paintings, prints, maps, and images that tell our story as a day resort,1826 to 1833. When the Mount Vernon Hotel opened in 1826, middle-class New Yorkers came not only for a day of relaxation in the Manhattan countryside but also to experience the luxuries inside the day hotel, including the art on its walls. This program showcases the art in our collection that tells the story of the land, the building, and the guests who visited during the1820s and 1830s. See portraits of people involved with the Mount Vernon Hotel, maps and other images of the property, portraits of founding fathers, and artwork from the Hudson River School and China – an evocative mix of portraits, landscapes, and images that all reflect the lives and interests of the people who came here in the early 19th century.
