Step Your Story Up: Writer's Workshop

REGISTER HERE Join our free, monthly writing workshop, Step Your Story Up! All ages and levels of experience are welcome. Since January 2026, these workshops have been led by editorial consultant David Meltzer. David has worked with New York Times bestselling authors, including David Sedaris, facilitated literary awards and nonfiction grants at Whiting, and is delighted to lead these workshops at the Desmond-Fish Public Library. Most recently, he’s scouted the literary novel MỸ DOCUMENTS by Kevin Nguyen (One World / PRH, 2025), sold a forthcoming medical memoir by Ruvanee Pietersz Vilhauer, Ph.D. to Harvard University Press, and edited the funny, gothic novel A BLOOD AS BRIGHT AS THE MOON (Titan, 2025) by Andrea Morstabilini. How it works Each month, the deadline to share writing is the Thursday before the workshop date. All writing is organized into a Reading Materials Packet, which attendees will receive on the Friday before the workshop. Author names will be removed so we can focus on the writing. Submitting writing in advance is not required to attend the workshop. The intention for every workshop is to benefit everyone’s writing, discernment, and love for the craft. At the workshop, we’ll meditate, read aloud all the writing in the packet, and share our feedback. David will lead the group through the writing samples, offer advice as if the authors were his clients, and encourage participation from the entire group. The purpose of this workshop is to improve our writing by using professional practices to develop, structure, and clarify our stories. This month’s workshop will take place in the Program Room.
