About this event

Dir. Richard Kelly. 2006, 145 mins. 35mm. With Dwayne Johnson, Seann William Scott, Sarah Michelle Gellar, Mandy Moore, Justin Timberlake, Miranda Richardson. In 2006, J. Hoberman called Southland Tales “a visionary film about the end of times. There hasn’t been anything comparable in American movies since Mulholland Drive.” Manic, messy, and endlessly referential, Southland Tales skewers George W. Bush, reality TV, and digital media to present an unforgettable satire of post-9/11 America. The film was not—and still may not be for everyone—but what it lacks in precision it more than makes up for in ambition. The film is set in the aftermath of two catastrophic nuclear attacks in Texas and follows the intertwining storylines of an action film actor, a porn star, and a pair of twin brothers. Stylistically it is no less convoluted, mashing up high and low art in a pitch-black comedy pastiche. Tickets: $17.50 / $12 senior and students / $10 youth / $7 MoMI members. There is a $1.50 transaction fee per ticket for all online purchases. The cost of admission may be applied toward a same-day purchase of a membership. Order tickets. Please pick up tickets at the Museum’s admissions desk upon arrival. All seating is general admission.
