About this event

Join scientist, writer, and photographer Dr. Loren Merrill for a special early morning nature walk before the garden opens to the public. Enjoy the beauty and tranquility of the morning garden while learning to notice the fascinating details that most people walk right past. As you explore the garden together, Dr. Merrill will reveal how seemingly ordinary observations tell remarkable stories about adaptation, survival, and the relationships that connect every living thing. You'll discover how slowing down and looking closely can transform the way you experience the natural world. Inspired by Henry David Thoreau's desire to "live deliberately," seeing with intent is the practice of becoming an active observer rather than a passive visitor. Like Thoreau, who sought to be fully present in the world around him, we'll engage our senses, ask questions, and discover the extraordinary in what might at first seem ordinary. When we focus our attention outward, we develop an incredible capacity for curiosity, discovery, and appreciation of the natural marvels all around us. Whether you're new to natural history or have spent years exploring the outdoors, this two-hour program is designed for all experience levels. Gardeners, photographers, bird lovers, and anyone who enjoys spending time in nature will leave with practical observation skills that will enrich every future walk, seeing familiar places through new eyes. This is a rain-or-shine event. $25 for members, $35 for non-members. Pre-registration is required for this program. Please arrive no later than 7:55 AM. The gate will close promptly at 8:00 AM. Loren Merrill holds a Ph.D. in animal behavior, wildlife ecology and physiology from the University of California, Santa Barbara, and attended Cornell University for his undergraduate degree. He is now a science writer and nature photographer and draws heavily from his background in ecology and natural history. Raised in New England, he has conducted research and…
