About this event

Dir. Ingmar Bergman. 1966. 82 mins. Sweden. DCP. “If looked at through the right queer lens, Bergman’s Persona could be among the most penetrating break-up movies ever made.” With his landmark drama Persona, which celebrates its 60th anniversary this year, Ingmar Bergman reached new heights of visual poetry. Liv Ullmann, in her first of many legendary collaborations with Bergman, plays a stage actor who has inexplicably gone silent. Bibi Andersson is equally mesmerizing as the garrulous young nurse caring for her at a remote island cottage. Isolated together, the women perform a mysterious spiritual and emotional transference in a scene that has come to influence generations of filmmaking. Shot by the great Sven Nykvist, Persona remains a penetrating, dreamlike work of profound psychological depth that has long been discussed as a breakthrough tale of unspoken love. The Museum is pleased to co-present this masterpiece on the big screen with NewFest, New York’s Largest Queer Film Fest. Purchase tickets through NewFest’s website. Co-presented with:
