Open Classroom - Dance and Society: What is the Value of the Dancing Human Body in the Age of Robots?"

Alvin Sherman Library: Fourth Floor, Room 4009, Open Classroom. This talk will use the recent viral video of a dancing robot falling and being dragged offstage, as a jumping off point to discuss a range of issues related to dance and the body. We will first look at the history of dance and examine key moments where power structures were disrupted, old models were questioned, and new forms were created as a response to changes in society. We will examine where we are today and explore why the human body in live performance remains as powerful as ever. We will also explore how dance can connect us to ourselves and each other in a time of AI and robots. This series is a collaboration between the Farquhar Honors Program and the Alvin Sherman Library. Each lecture highlights pressing topics from today's headlines, providing in-depth analysis and diverse perspectives. Tailored for undergraduates and lifelong learners, these lectures foster critical thinking and informed discussions on current events shaping our world. Lanczi is an accomplished dancer, choreographer, and educator whose work has been performed throughout the United States and internationally in South Korea, Brazil, and Germany. She has collaborated with numerous renowned choreographers and presented her own choreography at major venues and festivals. In addition to her creative work, Lanczi is a dedicated mentor and master teacher, regularly leading workshops and serving as a board member of the Florida Dance Education Organization.
