On The Prairie Art Exhibition

About this event

Oct. 28–Nov. 14, 2026 The Next Picture Show invites artists to explore the landscapes, wildlife, plants, and changing character of the Midwest prairie in On the Prairie, a new exhibition inspired by last year’s Nature in Nachusa. This year, the exhibition expands beyond Nachusa Grasslands to celebrate prairies throughout the Midwest—from protected preserves and restored grasslands to the prairie landscapes found close to home. Artists are encouraged to interpret the prairie in their own way, capturing its wide-open spaces, native plants, wildlife, changing seasons, dramatic skies, and the quiet details found within this distinctive landscape. Plein air painters are especially encouraged to participate. The prairie offers an ideal setting for painting from life, and work created on location at prairie preserves and natural areas throughout the Midwest is welcome. The exhibition is open to 2-D and 3-D artwork in a variety of media and styles, including painting, drawing, photography, mixed media, sculpture, and other original work inspired by the Midwest prairie. Whether created outdoors on location or developed later in the studio, On the Prairie celebrates the beauty, diversity, and artistic possibilities of one of the Midwest’s defining landscapes. Sponsor Info We are thrilled to have Sauk Valley Bank as this show’s sponsor. Artist Info The application deadline is Oct. 17, 2026. Application Page
