OCAA Art Show: Thomas Livingstone Photography

Join the Ouray County Arts Association and the Wright Opera House for the opening reception of Historic Treasures of the San Juan Mountains, a photography exhibition by Colorado photographer Thomas Livingstone. Through striking black and white photography, Livingstone documents the historic mines, weathered structures, and forgotten places scattered throughout the San Juan Mountains. The exhibition is drawn from a seven-year photographic project that culminated in his acclaimed book, Historic Treasures of the San Juan Mountains, preserving a remarkable visual record of Colorado's mining heritage. Born in New York and raised in Colorado, Livingstone developed an early appreciation for mountain landscapes before studying at the Brooks Institute of Photography in Santa Barbara. Since opening his Colorado gallery in 2011, his work has been exhibited throughout the state and has earned recognition for its blend of fine art and historic preservation. As Livingstone explains through his work, these images are more than photographs of abandoned buildings. They are lasting records of the people, industries, and communities that helped shape the American West. His photographs invite viewers to slow down, study the details, and appreciate the enduring beauty found in places often overlooked. Today, Thomas also leads photography workshops, including recent invitations to teach at the renowned Ghost Ranch in Abiquiú, New Mexico, encouraging photographers to approach the landscape with curiosity, patience, and a deeper appreciation for its timeless character.
