Leesburg Public Library - Meeting Room A, Leesburg Public Library. The Florida Master Gardener Program is an outreach program composed of UF/IFAS Extension certified volunteers who are trained to provide research-based horticultural education to Florida residents. Learn from their expertise on gardening, landscaping, and environmental stewardship. Each session highlights practical tips and research-based information designed to help our community enjoy and care for Florida’s unique natural environment. Topic: Camellias First introduced to the United States in the late 1770s, camellias became a fixture of Southern landscapes in the nineteenth century as estate gardeners recognized how well these blooming shrubs and small trees thrived in the regional climate. Today, gardeners appreciate them for their five distinct flower forms and dependable cool season color. This presentation explores the history and care of these classic plants, including how to plan your garden for continuous blooms. Attendees will learn the differences between early blooming Sasanquas, which typically flower from October through December, and late season Japonicas, which carry the display from January through April.
