Make+Take: Lotus Fold Book Structure

About this event

Let’s Make+Take!—Based on the origami lotus form, this book is sometimes called the snake, dragon, or star accordion. Together we’ll learn how to make this beautiful folded paper book structure and explore its many possibilities for length and size. After making one book structure with a hard cover, we’ll push the structure even further to experiment in creating a seasonal garland! Level: All levels welcome – no experience necessary Registration closes November 11, 2026 and all materials are provided. Though not required, students may wish to bring the following items: (optional) A personal apron (though we’ll have extras handy) (optional) A notebook or sketchbook for taking notes MEET YOUR INSTRUCTOR: Amaal Younes is a multidisciplinary artist, designer, and craft-based practitioner born in Cairo, Egypt, now based in Washington, DC. Her work is rooted in material exploration, storytelling, and the cultural intimacy of handmade objects. Moving between book arts, design, and visual practice, she is interested in how craft can hold memory, emotion, and community. In 2017 Amaal co-founded Grain Studio, a bookbinding and craft initiative that combined traditional handwork with collaborative making and social engagement. Her current body of work, Hands of a Wanderer, explores migration, belonging, and slow making through functional objects and narrative craft.
