Make+Take: DIY Suminagashi Marbling

Let’s Make+Take!—Suminagashi-style paper marbling is the centuries-old process of painting on water. Ink is floated on the water’s surface and swirled around using breath and brushes. Paper is set on top of the water’s surface, resulting in swirling patterns and organic designs. In this Make+Take you’ll learn about the methods and materials, then explore ways to create a variety of designs using very simple materials. The paper marbling process is perfect for all makers and learners, especially those just beginning to explore creative practices. Level: Beginner – no experience necessary! Registration closes November 11, 2026 and all materials are provided. WORKSHOP SUPPLIES: Registration includes all the materials necessary for class—just come ready to have fun! In addition, students may wish to bring the following optional items as well: (optional) Personal apron (we’ll have extras through)—waterproof is recommended, but a sturdy kitchen apron will do (optional) Sturdy shoes with good tread—the studio floor can get a bit slippery when wet. (optional) A notepad and pen for taking notes if you like MEET YOUR INSTRUCTOR: David Joo is a papermaker and artist focused in finding new expression in paper’s tactile and sensuous details. His work stems from paying close attention to both how paper is made and put to use in art and in the broader culture, ranging from the material foundations of visual culture to paper’s role in transmitting information. His designs and sculptural paper works have been shown in galleries, resorts, and virtual spaces after his practice first emerged amid the pandemic.
