Introduction to Bookmaking: Basic Structures

This six-hour workshop will introduce you to the basics of bookbinding, including appropriate materials and tools needed to make your own notebooks/journals. Book structures taught will include a variety of sewn pamphlet books, a paper wrapped hardcover accordion book, single sheet folded book structures and a slim case binding. Additionally, you will learn the tools needed in a basic bookbinding tool kit, receive a detailed list of bookmaking resources, get a tour of the bindery and will consider some basic concepts for designing book content and structures to suit your individual needs. By the end of the course, you will have an understanding of the basic structures of bookbinding which will form a strong foundation for furthering your bookbinding skills. Level: Beginner – no previous experience necessary Registration closes October 24, 2026. Material fees are included with your registration to cover the supplies provided in class. Students may wish to gather/purchase additional materials for class (see the materials list below). This list will also be provided with the registration confirmation email. Students may want to consider bringing the following items: (optional) Personal apron (we’ll have extras in class) or wear clothes that can get messy (optional) Notebook or sketchbook and pen for taking notes MEET YOUR INSTRUCTOR: Krista Sharp, a native Oklahoman and a member of the Cherokee Nation, has lived and worked in the Washington, D.C. area for over 23 years. She is a book artist and an award-winning graphic and web designer currently working at the Smithsonian Institution.
