Make+Take: Gelatin Plate Monotypes

Let’s Make+Take!—Learn to create beautiful, unique prints in minutes … without a press! Using Gelatin plates and water-based printing printmaking inks, students will learn to utilize stencils as well as natural and found objects to make layered textures. The final hand-printed pieces are suitable as one-of-a-kind finished prints or as a jumping off point for other mixed media and collage projects. Level: Beginner—no experience necessary! Registration closes October 28, 2026 and all materials are provided. Sample image (detail) by Pam Lawton WORKSHOP SUPPLIES: Registration includes all materials—just come ready to have fun! In addition, you may want to bring the following items for class: (optional) Personal apron (we’ll have extras) and/or wear clothes that can get messy (optional) Notebook and pen to take notes (optional) Any paper you’d like to try printing on. Good options include heavier printmaking paper, watercolor paper, etc. MEET YOUR INSTRUCTOR: Dr. Pamela Harris Lawton, Florence Gaskins Harper Endowed Chair in Art Education and thought leader for the Hurwitz Center at the Maryland Institute College of Art, is a fifth-generation Washingtonian, educator, and product of DC public schools. Lawton was introduced to printmaking as a participant in Discover Graphics, a professional printmaking program housed at the Smithsonian American Art Museum. She holds a BA degree in Studio Art and Sociology, an MFA in Printmaking, and an EdDCTA in art education. For the past 25 years she has taught art/art education at the college level and served as Director of Education Studies at the former Corcoran College of Art + Design. Honors include NAEA Distinguished Fellow, NAEA Higher Education Art Educator of the Year (2025), J. Eugene Grigsby Award (COMC/NAEA), Pearl Greenberg Award for Teaching and Research in Art Education, Fulbright Distinguished Chair at the University of Edinburgh-UK, and Associate Artist at the Tate Exchange in London.
