Writing Workshop. What is a picture book? Picture books are stories meant for the youngest of readers, where the illustrations and text work together to tell a story. They beg to be read aloud (like poetry!) and they make children lean in, eyes wide, waiting for what happens next. In this introduction to writing picture books, Alexandra will introduce attendees to the art and craft of writing picture books. Attendees will learn why picture books are critical for young readers, as well as the key elements of writing picture books, including character, plot and structure, and language. Finally, attendees will spend some time brainstorming picture book ideas and creating the foundation for their own story, which they can share with others. Alexandra Alessandri is the award-winning author of several books for children, including Feliz New Year, Ava Gabriela!, Isabel and Her Colores go to School, Our World Colombia, Lupita’s Hurricane Palomitas, and Fly, Pajarito, Fly. The daughter of Colombian immigrants, she is also an educator and a poet, with some of her work appearing in The Acentos Review, Rio Grande Review, Atlanta Review, and Young Adult Review Network.
