International Observe the Moon Night at Innisfree

Celebrate NASA’s International Observe the Moon Night with family and friends under the waxing gibbous Moon at Innisfree! Tucked in an ancient glacial bowl that defines the horizon, Innisfree has very little light pollution, making night-sky viewing here a sublime experience. As the sun goes down, we are delighted to welcome back award-winning science writer and communicator Corey S. Powell, who will kick off the evening around 6:45 with a short, informal talk exploring where the Moon came from and what makes it such a special and unusual companion to Earth. A new sound system will make it easier for everyone gathered on the overlook to hear and enjoy the conversation. After the talk, head out into the garden, where volunteers from the Mid-Hudson Astronomical Association will have an array of telescopes set up for viewing the Moon and other noteworthy celestial objects. Their knowledgeable and enthusiastic members will help visitors find their way around the night sky, answer questions, and offer closer looks at lunar craters, mountains, and other features that are difficult to see with the unaided eye. Bring your own binoculars, too; they are terrific for viewing the Moon. Sunset is at 6:25 PM, and astronomical twilight ends at 7:47 PM, when the garden will be truly dark. Consider arriving early to enjoy a picnic on the overlook before the talk for a beautiful start to this romantic evening under the Moon. Bring a blanket or folding chairs, along with a small light source such as a cell phone, flashlight, headlamp, or lantern. Please dress for the weather and uneven terrain. Red lights are required after sunset to protect everyone’s night vision.
