About this event

Registration is encouraged but not required. Your answers to registration questions will help shape this event. Join Andrew DeVigal and the Deschutes Public Library for a community conversation about how people find, share, and make sense of local news. Drawing on the Agora Journalism Center’s work with communities across Oregon, this program will explore why local journalism matters, how social media and community networks shape what we know, and what it means to build a healthier local information ecosystem. Participants will leave with new ways to think about the news they consume and why trusted local information is essential to civic life. About the Presenter: Andrew DeVigal holds the endowed chair in journalism innovation and civic engagement and directs the Agora Journalism Center, a forum for the future of local news and civic health, at the University of Oregon's School of Journalism & Communication. The center energizes research, teaching, and learning to foster pathways for public participation and transform how communicators and journalists inform and relate with their communities. A constant connector and bridge builder, DeVigal’s leadership at the school has led to industry-recognized initiatives such as Gather, a platform that supports community-minded journalists, and the Doers Gathering, a toolkit that drives community-driven solutions to pressing local issues. Before joining the UofO, DeVigal was the multimedia editor at The New York Times, where he directed the multimedia team and conceived and produced ground-breaking story forms and processes that continue to shape the industry today.
