Amby Burfoot is one of two Mystic runners to have won the Boston Marathon. The other, of course, is John J. Kelley, honored with a statue just several blocks from the Mystic Noank Library. Kelley was Burfoot's coach and inspiration at Fitch Senior High School in 1963/64. After his Boston victory in 1968, Burfoot went on to win Connecticut's biggest road race, the Manchester Thanksgiving Day 5-mile, nine times.
