About this event

What is Homer’s Odyssey about, and why has it captivated audiences for thousands of years? Through four memorable scenes—including three featured in Christopher Nolan’s recent film adaptation—we’ll explore Odysseus’ encounters with the Cyclops, Circe, Nausicaa and his wife, Penelope. Along the way, we’ll consider the power of storytelling and discover the many sides of Homer’s complex hero, the “man of many turns.” Presenter Jennifer Kosak is an associate professor of Classics at Bowdoin College, where she teaches Greek and Latin language, literature and culture. Her research specializations include ancient Greek epic, tragedy and medicine, and she teaches all or part of the Odyssey in at least one of her courses every year. This event is free and open to all. Questions about the event can be emailed to us by clicking here.
