The Carter County Geological Society Presents: The Harding County Uranium Mine Reclamation Project with Kurt Hansen In 1954, uranium exploration in the North Cave Hills began. Between the mid-1950s and early 1960s, strip mining occurred in the area. An estimated 300 acres are impacted by disturbed bluffs, overburden piles, hazardous erosional features, highwalls, elevated radioactive materials, and heavy metals. Kurt Hansen is the District Ranger responsible for oversight of all activities on the Sioux Ranger District of the Gallatin National Forest. He has written several articles on native plants in Montana and South Dakota. Montana teachers may receive 1 hour of continuing education credits for attending this free program.
