Brahms' Requiem

About this event

For years Brahms struggled to compose due to extreme self-doubt and insecurity. Inspired by the profound grief he felt by the death of his mother and his mentor Robert Schumann, he completed the grand, seven-movement masterpiece over three years. He skipped the traditional Latin text and chose passages from the German Lutheran Bible instead, creating a work he designed to comfort and console the living. José Luis Gómez conducts Brahms’ poetic settings, A German Requiem. Plus, arias of Mozart and Carlos Chávez’ colorful realization of the organ Chaconne of Buxtehude.
