September’s selection, “The Frozen River” by Ariel Lawhon, is a gripping historical mystery inspired by the remarkable life of 18th-century midwife Martha Ballard. Set against the harsh winter landscape of Maine, the novel follows Martha as she becomes entangled in the investigation of a man found frozen in the Kennebec River. Blending mystery, history, and unforgettable characters, “The Frozen River” explores justice, courage, and the often-overlooked voices of women in early America.
