Rhythm in Nature Residency Plays Bird Souls: Score for Flying

Thursday, October 8, 2026 7:30 p.m. JMKAC Theater $25 / $20 members Register In this one-time-only evening-length performance, Susie Ibarra will conduct and perform alongside residency participants a unique piece of music echoing the rhythms of Sheboygan’s local ecosystems of freshwater in Lake Michigan, trees and their frequencies and fractals, and local birdsongs. Over the course of Susie Ibarra’s residency at JMKAC, a cohort of musicians handpicked by Susie Ibarra and her co-producer Jake Landau, including students from local high schools and universities, will participate in workshop intensives of discovery and deep listening through field recording, mixing, analyzing, and composing. The culmination of this Rhythm in Nature residency will be twofold: a concert on Thursday, October 8 where participants perform music based on these rhythms and experiences, and a community event on Saturday, October 10 during which the residency participants will lead their own communities through an open Rhythm in Nature workshop. Bringing together musicians from diverse generations, genres, and instrumentation, this emergent ensemble of performers becomes an ecosystem in itself. Performing Bird Souls: Score for Flying alongside Ibarra, Rhythm in Nature Residency participants will bring listeners further in tune with the vital rhythms found in Sheboygan during this rare opportunity for collective reflection and wonder. In lieu of a post-performance talkback, the artists invite you to join them for the free community event and open workshop on Saturday, October 10.
