Banned Books Week: San Lorenzo Educators Panel

About this event

Join six San Lorenzo Unified School District educators for a panel discussion during Banned Books Week on how debates about race, gender identity, sexual orientation, and book bans impact instruction, students, and teachers. During Banned Books Week, we celebrate the freedom to read, a freedom being challenged across the country. This discussion will be followed by a book signing by panelist Sue Granzella, author of Pushed to the Edge: Teachers' Stories from the Culture Wars. A limited number of copies of Sue Granzella's book as well as banned book giveaways will be available for attendees. Panelists: James Aguilar is Activities Director at San Lorenzo High, and a San Leandro City Councilmember. Marcela Barajas is Ethnic Studies and Health teacher at San Lorenzo High. Sue Granzella taught in public elementary schools for 32 years, 27 of them at Lorenzo Manor Elementary in the SLZUSD school district. Her writing has won numerous awards, and her new book is entitled: Pushed to the Edge: Teachers' Stories from the Culture Wars. Katrina Huaman is a School Social Worker at San Lorenzo High. Kaedan Peters teaches World History, Psychology, and Sociology at Arroyo High Moderator: Nicole Grashton, Teacher on Special Assignment, Dayton Elementary School Accessibility Library staff may take photos, videos, or audio recordings at our events.
