About this event
Howard Room. The Blue Hill Public Library is hosting Bangor Public Library's Digital Media Librarian (and former BHPL Librarian) Hannah Cyrus for a talk and workshop on AI, what it is, and how to avoid it, on Thursday October 8 at 6:30 p.m. in the library's Howard Room. Generative AI is being pushed hard by major technology companies everywhere, and invading your devices. In "Avoiding AI," Hannah Cyrus will cover the basics of how this technology works, why it is unreliable as a source of information, privacy concerns associated with AI, and some steps to disable it on your devices. If you are curious about large language models and artificial intelligence, or mad that everything from ChatGPT to Microsoft's Copilot to Google's AI summaries and more seems to show up without you asking for it or being able to get rid of it, join us to learn more and take control of your devices and your privacy. Hannah Cyrus is the Digital Media Librarian at the Bangor Public Library. Her work focuses on technology instruction and digital privacy, often centering around patrons concerned about their accounts or devices being compromised, falling victim to predatory schemes, or simply overwhelmed with junk email and spam phone calls, as well as those concerned by the ubiquitous creepiness of online surveillance capitalism. She was the recipient of the 2026 Jim Campbell Award for Intellectual Freedom from the Maine Library Association. She lives in South Blue Hill. This program is free and open to all. For more information, please contact the library at 374-5515 or email Assistant Director Kayleigh Thomas at kayleigh.thomas[at]bhpl.net
