Advanced Improv Skills: The Game of the Scene

Learn how to play with anyone and find the fuel to drive your scene work to the next comedic level! In this seven week, advanced skills class, students will learn all about Game of the Scene, the long-form improv tool that originated in Chicago at IO and was perfected by some of the most legendary teams out there, including the Upright Citizens Brigade. This class will be an in-depth breakdown of everything Game related and provide students with the tools to find longevity in their scenes, identify the unusual, define comedic patterns, and heighten the fun and playfulness of their scene work! This class includes a showcase. The prerequisite for this class is completion or current enrollment in Level Five Improv at Stomping Ground Comedy Theater or equivalent training with permission from the Training Center Director. This course will focus on: Identifying game in any scene organically Establishing the base reality of the scene Initiating Game directly pulled from premise Delving deep into “if this is true, what else is true?” Understanding the true comedic power of patterns Strengthening character work by utilizing the fuel in character game play About the Instructor: Hayden McGovern started teaching and coaching 8 years ago with the Four Day Weekend training center. He has taught a wide variety of ages and skill levels, though now specializes in Level 5 and advanced courses with Stomping Ground, and coaching independent teams. He has performed at the Magnet in New York (in the Del Close Marathon), at the Hideout in Austin, and various theaters in the DFW area, with experience in formats such as the JTS Brown, Deconstruction, Monoscene, Spokane, 2-Person, Narrative, and others. He is currently performing with SG’s VERSUS and independent teams Kaleidoscene and Handy. This is a seven week recurring course held Sundays, 6-8:30pm starting Sunday, April 26.
