Lubbock raised Buddy Holly, and the city has finally built an events scene worthy of its favorite son. The Buddy Holly Hall of Performing Arts and Sciences, a striking modern complex opened in 2021, hosts Broadway tours, ballet, and major concerts, while the Buddy Holly Center keeps his story and his glasses on display. The Depot Entertainment District supplies the nightlife, with the Cactus Theater staging Texas songwriters and tribute shows in a restored 1938 movie house. Texas Tech's 40,000 students keep the bars and clubs loud, and the city's West Texas songwriter tradition — from Mac Davis to the Flatlanders — still runs deep.
