Galveston is Texas' festival island. Mardi Gras Galveston, running since 1867, is one of the largest Mardi Gras celebrations in the country, with parades and balcony parties along the historic Strand district. Dickens on The Strand each December transforms the same Victorian ironfront blocks into nineteenth-century London, complete with costumed carolers. The Grand 1894 Opera House, a survivor of the great 1900 storm, hosts touring concerts and performances in one of Texas' most storied theaters, while Moody Gardens runs major seasonal festivals including an elaborate holiday lights event. Add beach concerts and the Pleasure Pier, and the island earns its year-round event calendar.
