Stillwater is the spiritual home of red dirt music — the rough-edged Oklahoma songwriter tradition that grew up around local bands and farmhouse jam sessions before conquering Texas and Nashville. Eskimo Joe's, Stillwater's self-described jumpin' little juke joint, has been the town's social anchor since 1975, while the bars along the Strip keep Oklahoma State students supplied with live country and rock most weekends. Tumbleweed Dance Hall hosts boot-stomping shows and the raucous Calf Fry festival each spring. At the other end of the spectrum, the McKnight Center for the Performing Arts brings world-class orchestras and artists to campus in a stunning modern hall.
