Port Chester is a small Westchester village with one of the most storied concert halls in America: the Capitol Theatre, the 1926 movie palace where the Grateful Dead played legendary early-seventies runs, reborn as a state-of-the-art rock venue. The Cap books major touring artists into a room of impossible intimacy, and Garcia's, the attached club named for Jerry, hosts smaller shows nearly every week. Half an hour from Manhattan by train, the village's restaurant row — rich with Latin American spots — makes the pre-show meal part of the tradition. For many artists and fans, the Cap is simply sacred ground.
