Winston-Salem calls itself the City of Arts and Innovation, and the arts half is well-earned. The University of North Carolina School of the Arts feeds the city a constant stream of exceptional young performers, with public performances downtown at the Stevens Center. The Ramkat has quickly become one of the state's best mid-size music rooms, booking national touring acts across genres. The National Black Theatre Festival, held in odd-numbered years, draws tens of thousands for one of the most significant theater gatherings in the country, and RiverRun International Film Festival each spring adds serious cinema. Old Salem's historic district gives community festivals a setting like no other.
