Chapel Hill and neighboring Carrboro form one of the South's legendary college music scenes, the launching pad for Superchunk, Merge Records, and a long lineage of indie rock. Cat's Cradle in Carrboro has been the region's essential club for over five decades — touring bands treat it as a rite of passage. Local 506 and a constellation of smaller rooms keep Franklin Street loud on weekends, while Carolina Performing Arts brings world-class artists to UNC's Memorial Hall. Basketball season is its own performing art here, and Halloween on Franklin Street remains one of the great college-town street parties in America.
