Helen is a north Georgia mountain town that rebuilt itself as a Bavarian alpine village in the 1960s — and committed to the bit completely. Its Oktoberfest, running from September into November at the riverside Festhalle, is one of the longest-running in the United States, with oompah bands, dancing, and steins flowing for weeks on end. Summer brings tubing crowds down the Chattahoochee and live music to the beer gardens, while the Christmas season turns the village into a twinkling alpine postcard. It is kitsch executed with total sincerity, and the event calendar never really stops.
