Preservation Detroit is a non-profit that has great walking tours. Explore Minoru Yamasaki’s legacy in the Cultural Center. Minoru Yamasaki, Detroit’s best-known midcentury architect, left his mark all over metro Detroit and beyond. On select dates, we explore Yamasaki’s legacy in Detroit’s Cultural Center. Learn how Yamasaki came to Detroit in the 1940s, established his own firm, and then began working with Wayne State University in the mid-1950s to extend and execute their master plan with new buildings, including four that he designed, and the transition to a pedestrian-friendly campus, while helping to establish the College for Creative Studies' new 1950’s campus. Highlights include the magnificent McGregor Memorial Conference Center and its Reflecting Pool and Sculpture Garden. Meeting spot: The tour departs from the Josephine Ford Sculpture Garden on the College of Creative Studies campus on John R at E. Kirby. Items to note about our tours: All tours take place rain or shine, and are about 2 to 2.5 hours long. Please arrive 15 minutes before the start of the tour. Advance ticket purchases are available through the afternoon of the day before the tour. If there is a date missing from the tour page, the tour for that location/date is sold out. Tickets may be refunded up to 7 days prior to the date of a tour; after that, tickets are not refundable. Parking: Metered and non-metered street parking is available in the immediate area.
