Writing Toward Freedom: Memoir, Incarceration and the Unifying Power of Storytelling

Community Meeting Room. Join acclaimed Maine author, memoirist, and educator Mira Ptacin for a conversation about her more than thirteen years teaching memoir writing at the Maine Correctional Center. Through stories from the classroom, Ptacin will explore how writing can become a tool for self-discovery, dignity, healing, and human connection, even in places where voices are too often overlooked. Following the talk, participants will take part in a brief generative writing exercise inspired by the workshops she leads with incarcerated women. No writing experience is necessary—just curiosity and a willingness to put pen to paper. Please bring paper and a writing utensil. This program is inspired by this year's A Capital Read. A Capital Read, a “one book” community read project spearheaded by Lithgow Library, and sponsored by the Friends of Lithgow Library.
